Back with the 25th Single, SKE48 and center Furuhata Nao take us on a trip to Los Angeles for a location shot promotional video that drips so much summer that a bubble party breaks out. Using a few familiar spots (well, familiar if you’re from LA), SKE48’s “FRUSTRATION” start things out in a bounce on the driveway with a rap (who are those rappers?). The groove gets melodicically stabbing call-and-response vocals and an incessant kick drum that matches perfectly with the midriff baring summer attire of the group. “FRUSTRATION” is a party in the streets complete with gushing fire hydrants waiting to happen. The worst you can probably say about the song is that it is a brainless summer jam; but then again I don’t think anyone around here has a problem with that kind of thing when the thermometer tops 100 degrees. You can frin “FRUSTRATION”, the 25th single from SKE48, in stores on July 24, 2019.

SKE48 (S.K.E. Forty-eight, derived from Sakae 48) is a Japanese idol girl group produced by Yasushi Akimoto. SKE48 is named after the Sakae district in Nagoya of Aichi Prefecture, where the group is based. The group performs at SKE48 Theater on 2F of Sunshine Sakae, a shopping center in Sakae, Nagoya. Avex Group is its current official label. They are the 1st sister group of AKB48. Members of this group are dispatched into three groups, chronologically named “Team S”, “Team KII” and “Team E”. Back with some summer chill-out jams, MANON brings us her latest “AIR KISSING feat.KM&LEX”. There’s a distinct and delicate feel with the melodies of the song that’s echoed in the promotional video. It’s a hot summer night, and you just want to get out to the streets where things are cooler both literally and figuratively. There’s not much particularly going on out there, but you’re dressed up and down just in case. “AIR KISSING” is just that kind hot summer night song. When Manon gets out on the streets, she meets LEX there, and the melodies turn into a rap duet. The pairing makes a nice duet with voices that compliment each other, but of course you need to be crushing on Manon, because that’s what we do around here. Starting with a lonely shot of Chittiii at a bar high top, BiSH’s “MORE THAN LiKE” takes the split screen concept much further than I’ve ever seen in an idol promotional video. The girls get their own sliver of the screen, and as you might expect from this PV genre the girls throw objects from slice to another. But then, the girls start to jump into each other’s screen maintaining continuity and sometimes even camera position. The girls look connected even though we are looking at separate scenes. By the end, BiSH reassembles in their CARROTS and STiCKS outfits for a brief dance shot; but it’s really not the focus of the PV. Meanwhile, the musical offering of “MORE THAN LiKE” plays like a more melodic version of the pop punk. The song is not as caustic as some of the album track offerings the BiSH has served up on the video screen, and I really like it! If you know me, then you know that I adore the sounds of the girls taking their deep breathes before lines; we get plenty of that here with “MORE THAN LiKE”. You can find “MORE THAN LiKE” on BiSH’s “CARROTS and STiCKS” available in stores on July 3, 2019.

BiSH (“Bish” ビッシュ), also known as Brand-new idol SHiT (Shinsei Kuso Idol, 新生クソアイドル), is a Japanese idol group that was founded in 2015 by their manager Watanabe Junnosuke. The group was conceived as a successor to BiS, whose first incarnation had disbanded the previous year but have since developed their own identity. In January 2015, Watanabe Junnosuke announced his plans to restart BiS and opened auditions to find members. For their third time out on the seas, the girls of STU48 present the upbeat and cheery “Daisuki na hito (大好きな人)”. The girls get together after school and head for the boat en masse. A dance shot in the ship’s hold gets supplemented with the girls above decks for sweeping shots featuring the Setouchi gorgeous seaways. “Daisuki na hito” also features a taste of what the shipboard theater holds for its patrons. As the sun sets, the girls assemble once again on the top deck for more dance shots. Pleasant and cheery, STU48 continue to build their brand with solid performances and single offerings. “Daisuki na hito”, the third single from STU48, becomes available in stores on July 31, 2019.

Summertime rolls for Appare! Harajuku for their major debut release set for September 18, 2019. After 3 years of performances, King Records puts the girls on their roster and “Appare summer!! (あっぱれサマーっ! !)” on their rotation. We see the girls backed by high arched glass windows and surrounded by mylar balloons for their indoor shots. Seeing the towels around the members’ necks should be a sure sign, and as you guessed it Appare! Harajuku are twirling the cotton banners around by the chorus of “Appare summer!!”. The song has a catchy, easy-to-sing chorus, and I can already hear the chants when I inevitably see the song performed live. That said, I enjoy the towel waving and the hip shaking choreography: it’s perfect for the summer. “Appare summer!!” has the sound of a winner, and you should definitely give it a good listen. Working from the emotional side of the rock spectrum, SPARK SPEAKER release the promotional video to a track from their debut single “SAYONARA / Life is Beautiful”. I don’t blame you if you didn’t hear about their latest single: it was a limited release at the Tower Records Shinjuku store. I am glad we all get a chance to take a listen to “SAYONARA”. Backed by a three peice band that bashes away on the double kick drum, SPARK SPEAKER deliver an impassioned performance that intercuts with a “girls only” performance shot. Suspended lights shining just into the camera’s lens provides all the set decoration that the need. Visual interestingness is added by compositing solo close ups with time lapse images of clouds breaking. “SAYONARA” hits the higher marks on the metronome without heading into ludicrous speed. “SAYONARA” makes a for a great listen than we’ll probably need to wait for if we want physical copies. I’ll definitely update here should copies become available.

Spark Speaker is a Japanese rock idol unit. They were formerly known as DINOSAUR BRAIN and performed EDM music before changing their name and concept in October, 2016. The current lineup includes Mikase Fuuko (三瀬ふう子), Sugihara Yukina (杉原由規奈), Asahi Kouseira (朝日向星羅), Kiyama Shizuka (木山しずか).

In preparation for their 15 year best album “Perfume The Best ‘P Cubed'”, A-chan, KASHIYUKI, and NOCCHI release the lyric PV for their new song “Nanananairo (ナナナナナイロ)”. Taking a cab around the night markets of Taiwan, the girls arrive at a food market. Soon the girls arrive at a river for some cooling bask time, and then it’s back to the city for a lantern festival. If all if these scenes seem familiar, it’s because they are lifted from a series of commercials for Kracie’s “Hadabisei” sheet masks. The images are gorgeously shot, and if this is all there will be for “Nanananairo” then at least it looks pretty. But, it seems like there might be, hopefully will be a more complete version promotional video to the song. You can find “Nanananairo” on Perfume’s upcoming best album due on September 18, 2019.

Doing things a little bit differently, Luce Twinkle Wink☆’s next release will be a DVD single entitled “Wonder Five”. To give us a taste of this release, the group recently released this short version promotional video that picks up as the girls are on the beachside. The sand is white, the skies are blue, and the sea is a beautiful turquoise. The girls get a dance shot on a white deck with frilly, frilly white dresses with color keyed ribbons here and there. We also get a few shots of the girls in more “plain” clothes in both solos and a grassy dance shot.Everything is beautiful and cute, and chorus gives us a wonderful arm swinging choreography that I want to try right now. The girls of Nagoya idol group TEAM SHACHI are working up to a new album, but have released the promotional video for their new song “Rock Away” to hold us over until its release. Looking a bit more rock than usual with streaked hair and rag doll clothes, TEAM SHACHI deliver on the rock premise with an arrangement that tops out on the metronome and delivers those brassy brass arrangements that you crave. All the rock comes courtesy of Hidaka Touru（日高央, THE STARBEMS, THE BEAT CRUSADERS） and Bunta（TOTALFAT）. Of course, lets not forget that horn section! TEAM SHACHI transition between sections of the song with a hearty “Hey ho, let’s go” sung a bit differently than you might expect. In typical TEAM SHACHI style, the brand of rock heard here in “Rock Away” is not the kind of rock that’s getting all the play in the idol world: it’s not dark or overly aggressive, and no one is screaming over the top. “Rock Away” is a melodic, upbeat arrangement that leans just over to this side of anthemic. Drawing from last year’s “i cAn Fly” album, Toricago show us a more intimate side of things with their emotional song “Hai (灰)”. The instrumentals, like most of what you’ll hear from Toricago, are guitar forward. In this instance, the group provide that swirling, gently overdriven guitar sound that’s backed with atmospheric strings. If that sounds like a warm summer’s day on a tatami, then that’s exactly right. A set of water color screens depicting the seasons get focus for the visuals as the girls themselves try to stay cool and indoors. A great set of backing vocals adds texture and depth to the main vocal melodies just as the girls are either just on the other side of the wooden frame or lending a shoulder. If you haven’t picked yourself up a copy of “i cAn Fly” (it’s available to stream on my streaming service of choice), I think youre missing out. You can fix your mistakes by picking yourself up a copy at the retailers listed below.

Coming at us with their second single today is sora tob sakana and their Ending theme to the TV Anime “Is it wrong to pick up girls in a Dungeon? II”. “Sasayakana Shukusai (ささやかな祝祭)” puts the newly trio’d trio (member Kazamarei Maraika left the group earlier this year) in the forest for a little bit of a jazzy romp that’s a few hundred miles away from the prog leanings of much of the group’s catalog. You can feel the swing of the rhythm with the horns, upright bass, and richly layered instrumentation. Sora tob sakana play greek chorus to a story of boy meets girl told through a series of connected skits. “Sasayakana Shukusai” plays with long instrumental sections that give the girls to focus on their cheeery choreography (for a change). I’m not sure what all this has to do with the anime, but I’m glad the girls get the call for another anime of note. You can pick up a copy of the second single from sora tob sakana “Sasayakana Shukusai” when it hits retailers on July 24, 2019.

The analog flicker of an out of tune television provides the main conceit for Will-O’s new promotional video “Kanjyo Sensen Hikari Emotion”. The girls stand with exposed shoulders for the illusion of nakedness. Naked emotion, naked performances, juxtaposed with the deliberate flicker of artifice. These images are not without precedence, since they echo the covers of the single from which this song comes. To my 1980’e eyes, this looks like the world of Max Headroom gone out of control. But, that’s probably not the conceit Will-O’ is aiming for. “Kanjyo Sensen Hikari Emotion” the song, which we covered a little on an earlier New PV Alert, is an easy favorite with its accessible and emotionally transparent vocal performances. As I’m rushing through to get promotional videos out to you, I’ve come across this lyric PV by Melty Hz for their song “Oh My!” I don’t know much about the group, but they’re performing a style of idol rock that I think might interest you. The opening graphic may make this look like an 80’s nostalgic product, “Oh My!” is a guitars forward, melodic rock song that isn’t afraid to mix in a few double kick drum licks with a dance beat. For the visual side of the lyric PV, we get live footage of the girls at a recent performance, which definitely sells the group even more. I’ll keep an eye on this trio for you. In the meantime, check it out for yourself!

963, the idol rap duo from Fukuoka, come at us with a new promotional video for their song “GAME”. Like some of the best PVs, the video footage consists of nothing more than the girls out and about in their home town. We get a good look at apartments, a spontaneous picnic, and the girls mugging for the camera as they make their way down the street. While it may not be as flashy as their previous PV “Hoshi no fumanchi“, the girls remain as personable as ever.

963 (kurumi) is a JAPANESE IDOL girl group who live in Fukuoka JAPAN born from the Kurume TV program “Kurume Koi Biyori” in Kurume City in 2013. The first lineup featured a four person group featuring Koga Yako (formerly in LaLuce/Last Idol). The first generation of 963 ceased activity in December 2014. The second generation of 963 began in July 2015 with the group reorganized as a duo. After lineup changes, 963 currently includes members Pi-piru (ぴーぴる, original reorganization member) and Re-yuru (れーゆる).

Admittedly, this is me playing catchup with Toricago, since the PV featured here “1995 A.D.” was released on June 28. I’m sure that’s not too much matter, though. I’ve written quite a bit about Toricago in my time here, and that’s because I really enjoy the music that hear coming from this group. Not mention, but I remember 1995 A.D. really well; it’s nice to hear a callback to that time. Being a lyric PV, we don’t really get much more than abstract images and landscapes. A few composite images layer themselves up for an interestness factor, but really we are hear just to hear the song and make a fair attempt at singing along. “1995 A.D.” is available on Toricago’s 3rd album “PAN” available through the digital retailers listed below.

There’s a bit of a celebration going on in Osaka as the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group in Osaka have just been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site (on July 6, 2019). To add to the celebration, Tacoyaki Rainbow, the Stardust Promotions group from Osaka released a new version of their second single “Naniwa no Haniwa”. Featuring the group at the World Heritage site, we get plenty of looks at the 3rd to 6th century burial mounds. There’s also a little bit of the haniwa (decorative clay figures which can take the form of cylinders or representations of houses, tools, weapons and human silhouettes). “Naniwa no haniwa” originally went on sale in 2014, but you can always grab yourself a copy at the links below.

Takoyaki Rainbow (たこやきレインボー, abbreviated Takoniji (たこ虹) and sometimes styled as Tacoyaki Rainbow) is a five member idol girl group represented by Stardust Promotion family (Momoiro Clover Z, Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku, Team Shachi, Rock A Japonica, Batten Showjo Tai, Tokimeki Sendenbu, Hachimitsu Rocket, and Sakura Ebis, etc.). . The group was formed in 2012 and is based in Osaka in the Kansai region of Japan. Tacoyaki Rainbow’s lineup currently includes Haruna Mai (春名真依), Ayaki Sakura (彩木咲良), Kiyoi Saki (清井咲希), Nengishi Karen (根岸可蓮), and Hori Kurumi (堀くるみ).

AYUMIKURIKAMAKI (あゆみくりかまき) is a Japanese idol group consisting of Ayumi (singer) DJ “Kurika” and hype-woman “Maki”. The group name is a portmanteau of their names. The three girls are managed by Id Entertainment agency. Kurika and Maki met as high-school classmates in Kobe prefecture, and started out as a DJ unit Kurikamaki (くりかまき) in January, 2012. Since the abbreviation of their name (KuMa = KUrika-MAki) makes the word “kuma”, which means bear in Japanese, they dress up in bear costumes and claim to be 3-year-old bears. They posted their DJ performance on Niconico, which caught the management agency’s attention. They officially started their activity in November 2012, performing as an opening DJ in over 20 events a month. KurikaMaki released their first CD single “アナログマガール” (Analoguma-girl) on August 21, 2013. They released their second CD single “クマトナデシコ” (Kumatonadeshiko) on March 21, 2014, containing the B-side tracks ”春色ディスカバリー feat. ともだち” (Seishun Discovery featuring Tomodachi), featured Ayumi, a girl in the same management agency. Her singing caught Kurikamaki’s attention, and they claim to have persuaded her to join their group for over 5 months. On May 5, 2014, Ayumi officially joined Kurikamaki, and the group’s name was changed to Ayumikurikamaki, which is frequently abbreviated as Ayukuma. On May 12, 2016, the group announced that they can continue to perform as bears only until their solo live concert on July 8, 2016, after which they must perform as humans.
