New PV Alert: Dempagumi.inc – Keiji Jougaku-teki, Mahou

Dempagumi.inc brings a coupling track for their upcoming single to life with the promotional video for “Keiji Jougaku-teki, Mahou (形而上学的、魔法)”. A dimly lit warehouse level gives the promotional video ample space to stage the single cut action that comprises the majority of the run time. The members twirl between the columns in monochromatic dresses for an expressionistic feel. Meanwhile, “Keiji Jougaku-teki, Mahou” gives our ears a jazzy feel with acoustic drums pounding a swing for the choeographed twirls that seem to transfer energy from member to member. “Keiji Jougaku-teki, Mahou” definitely gives Dempagumi.inc and adult spin which the new configuration seems to relish. You can find “Keiji Jougaku-teki, Mahou” on Dempagumi.inc’s new release “Inochi no Yorokobi” on sale June 26, 2019.

New PV Alert: Hinatazaka46 – Doremisorashido / Kitsune

Hinatazaka46 – Doremisorashido

Hinatazaka46 – Kitsune

Hinatazaka46 get their second single off the ground with a pair of promotional videos for “Doremisorashida (ドレミソラシド)” and “Kitsune (キツネ)”. The A-side promotional video “Doremisorashido” brings the characteristic sunniness of the group’s theme to the play on familiar the solmization of the C major scale with in inclusion of “sora (sky)”. The majority of what you’ll see here is the group in a nearly empty pool working their choreography with just enough water to make the reflections shine. Some great “bullet time” camera captures Hinatazaka46 mid jump while the girls utilize some inventive movements for the dance. The group also includes solo shots of the girls in a scholastic environment to go along with the pool scenes. “Doremisorashido” is a pleasant way to while away your summer days when it gets too hot outside. “Doremisorashido”, the second single from Hinatazaka46, goes on sale on July 17, 2019.

New PV Alert: UP UP GIRLS (kakko KARI) – Da Dan Dance!

UP UP GIRLS (kakko KARI) get their beats off to the right foot with the release of the first PV from their latest single. Homey shots of Sekine Azusa and Saho Akari in plainclothes add a personal touch to “Da Dan Dance!” and its dancehall choreography. The dance shots also get supplemented with the Mori Saki, Furukawa Konatsu, and Arai Minami dressed as MCs seemingly narrating Azusa and Akari’s life dance like a postmodern existential drama. Meanwhile, “Da Dan Dance!” plays with horn driven, piano assisted accompaniments to the spirited pop arrangements. I find the punctuated rhythms of the “principles” read out quite catching, and the chorus makes me want to get up and cut a rug in an embarrassing display. No doubt about it, “Da Dan Dance!” scratches the pop itch that inflicts me. “Da Da Dance!” is the lead track on the newest UP UP GIRLS (kakko KARI) triple A-side single “Da Dan Dance!/Heat Beat Island/5 to the 5th Power”, available in stores on June 25, 2019.

New PV Alert: Kaede (Negicco) – Kaede no enkyori renai

The nostalgic pop lovers among us get another reason to celebrate with the release of Kaede from Negicco’s latest promotional video, “Kaede no enkyori renai (カエデの遠距離恋愛)”. An orgy of twanging guitars accompany the singer’s classic melodies as though our girl was wrapped in their strings. If you have been following Kaede’s solo works here on the New PV Alerts, you should have a pretty good idea about what to expect. The black & white images of Kaede playing temari or clanking a few of the percussive instruments heard in the soundtrack. Seriously, I am always in search of pop songs with a touch of melancholy that sounds like a warm afternoon warmed by the sun, and I’m getting a lot of that with Kaede. You can find “Kaede no enkyori renai” on her “Shinya. Anata wa Kyo wo Furikaeri, Mata Atarashii Asa dane.” mini album, on sale now.

New PV Alert: BiSH – DISTANCE

Embarrassingly, I’m getting to this BiSH promotional video release two weeks after its release. Even more embarrassing, “DiSTANCE” is the lead track on the 3rd album “CARROTS and STiCKS”. Well, we can fix that with a few clicks, can’t we? Heavily processed in red and with wind-blown hair seeming like the norm, BiSH get to a seaside sunset with surf pounding rocks, and one effigy of a rock stands out among the rest. The familiar vocal squeaks add the emotion to the mid tempo rocker that’s already heavy with sentiment. BiSH certainly have a way of making their performances sound like they’re being sung from the end of the universe. And trust me, I live for that squeak and crisis mode vocals. “DiSTANCE” falls under the BiSH category of emotional outpour next to similar classics like “Orchestra” or “My Landscape”, which should curry favor with its fans. “CARROTS and STiCKS” is available in stores on July 3, 2019.

New PV Alert: THE BANANA MONKEYS – Hachamecha hero

THE BANANA MONKEYS return to us with a new promotional video for their track “Hachamecha hero (ハチャメチャヒーロー)”. The tags above the PV’s title and the thumbnail image read “last Asuka”, and that’s what we are looking at: the last live performance for member Asuka Rei. Before we get there, I should comment on the track’s catchy melody that plays under a guitar centered arrangement lean with tricks. The upbeat track mixes live and off-shot images centered around Asuka. There’s growth to be shown here as Asuka and the rest of the girls show their progress from then to there to here. By the end of the promotional video, THE BANANA MONKEYS do away with all pretense and play the last address given by Asuka. It’s a tear-filled goodbye punctuated by a closed door. Yeah, it feels just about right.

New PV Alert: Malcolm Mask McLaren – The Idiot’s Song

Back with a powerful new track, the Malcolm Mask McLaren trio bring their bats to the promotional video for “The Idiot’s Song”. In bold colors, the girls visit a few dicey locales with brokedown cars and graffiti littered abandonment. MMM give a great looking performance complete with a hop here, a headbang there, and a kick to punctuate things. Don’t let the bats and gunshots to the camera fool you, “The Idiot’s Song” is a cheery piece of music that eventually gets to a very satisfying breakdown requisite of the genre. Malcolm Mask McLaren have been consistently releasing some great tracks and come with my recommendation if you are looking to bridge your hardcore addiction and your idol love. “The Idiot’s Song” is the fourth single from Malcolm Mask McLaren and is available in stores now.

New PV Alert: UP UP GIRLS (kakko KARI) – Heat Beat Island

The quick tempos and synth leads set up the heat for the newest UP UP GIRLS (kakko KARI) promotional video, “Heat Beat Island (ヒート ビート アイランド)” High above the city, the girls sing their song on the top floor. The music shifts to something a bit more carribean as the scene shifts to a wood bar where the girls get to sing their solo verse lines. The tropical themes and dance beats are an exoctic combination, and it makes for some pretty strange bedfellows that the UP UP GIRLS straighten out with their charisma. “Heat Beat Island”, which may as well refer to the isolated rooftop of the promotional video, gives us plenty of scenery to view as it encourages us to get up and dance. “Heat Beat Island” can be found on the latest UP UP GIRLS (kakko KARI) triple A-side single “Da Dan Dance!/Heat Beat Island/5 to the 5th Power”, available in stores on June 25, 2019.

New PV Alert: Avandoned – Margaret

Well, what’s happened since you last checked in with Avandoned? For starters, the group has adopted the English spelling of the group name officially (あヴぁんだんど -> avandoned). Even more striking: with the graduation of Kotori Katao leaving Usakura Beni feeling abandoned (yet again), Avandoned recruited new members and continue with Beni acting as “Playing Producer”. What hasn’t changed here is the quality pop offerings of the group. “Margaret (マーガレット)” gifts us with a lovely melody played on the piano with guitars and strings filling out the sound. If you get a chance, try to focus in on the dreamy backing vocals that play like an instrument tucked away in the mix. As always, I love the sound that Avandoned chooses for its arrangements. The girls, now numbered at six, take a day trip to the park and down the street to hair salon as Beni reflects on the memories of her day spent with her new mates. “Margaret” is a cute frolic of an afternoon that won’t waste your time. Of course, you should know by now that the flowers that Beni is blooming for her solo shots is her new group in metaphor. Sweet and touching, “Margaret” is a great addition to the Avandoned catalog. “Margaret” goes on sale June 26, 2019.

New PV Alert: lyrical school – LAST DANCE

Everyone say another hello to lyrical school, the idol rap group that’s been kicking it on the scene for quite some time now. Starting with their next release, their album “BE KIND REWIND”, the group will be releasing their material on Victor Entertainment. That means … MAJOR DEBUT!! To help introduce you to the group (as if we haven’t introduced you enough here at New School Kaidan), lyrical school releases their most charming promotional video yet! “LAST DANCE” has its heart in the eighties and its camera trained on Back to the Future’s pivotal dance scene recreated with practical effects and cardboard cutouts. But that’s not all! You’ll also see “Star Wars”, Pulp Fiction, Titanic, The Usual Suspects, and a whole host of VHS degraded movie scenes recreated by the girls of lyrical school. “LAST DANCE” keeps me watching to see just how the group recreates the pivotal scenes. I don’t think you’re going to have as much fun with another PV for quite a long time, so give lyrical school their due and your support! This one comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! You can get a copy of “LAST DANCE” digitally right now, or get a physical copy of “BE KIND REWIND” on September 11, 2019.

Chuning Candy – Happy Happy

Chuning Candy – Over the cloud

Chuning Candy – BESIDE

The girls of Chuning Candy release over to us a trio of Dance Practice Videos from their latest single “19 ~nineteen”. Knowing that you’re watching dance practice videos here, Wearing a pair of outfits, Chuning Candy take us through the choreography of their single’s coupling tracks. You shouldn’t expect and particular filmographic magic. The camera makes some interesting zooming movements in and aout of the formation, but no, there are no special effects or special filters (which is kinda what I want from my dance practice videos). Dance is really a speciality of Chuning Candy, and none of the five members look surprised to find themself in a dance studio. It’s a nice looking studio, and the girls rock the hell out of their choreography from the poppy “Happy Happy” to the more intense and funky “Over the cloud” to the modern sounds of “BESIDE”. You can find both tracks on the recently released “19 -nineteen-“, the fourth single from Chuning Candy.

Fairies march on to the July 17 release date for their 17th single “Metropolis” with the promotional video to the coupling track “Change My Life”. The stylishly shot video features a dance shot in a poured concrete parking level lit with tube lights set on the large columns. A few tricky camera shots give the illusion of a single take video, which doesn’t really detract from the feats of “Change My Life”. Fairies look very comfortable in their dance shots, which is not surprising for those of us who have followed the group for a while. The musical composition keeps in step with the Eurodance oriented “Metroplis” on the other side of the platter of this song. Tightly shot, “Change My Life” looks better than the A-side videos for most idol groups. Of course, I could always watch more Fairies dance shots (and you’ll often catch me watching Fairies late night on Twitter). You can find “Change My Life” on Fairies’s 17th single, “Metropolis” set for release on July 17, 2019.

New PV Alert: WILL-O’– Kanjyo Sensen Hikari Emotion / POP’N

WILL-O’ – Kanjyo Sensen Hikari Emotion

WILL-O’ – POP’N

Billing themselves as a pretty girls rock idol unit, WILL-O’ get their first exposure here at the New PV Alerts with a pair of Choreography Videos. I would regret not have the group’s debut single “Kanjyo Sensen Hikari Emotion” here as its own thing, but I don’t ever remember seeing a proper promotional video for the track! For now, you and I get this choreography track (and possible this CM video). The group shows us some real promise with choreography that keeps pace with their contemporaries and a really great sounding rock influenced track. I could easily imagine listening to “Kanjyo Sensen Hikari Emotion” on my car stereo. Meanwhile, POP’N amplifies the tempo for a track that breaks the metronome and yet manages a pop chorus. Give WILL-O’ a listen, and while you’re at it pick up their latest/first release listed below.

New PV Alert: Yukueshirezu Tsurezure – ssixth

A sixth single from YukueshirezuTsurezure (Not Secured, Loose Ends) comes with the self explanatory title “ssixth”. Certainly one of the more consistent Codomomental groups, Yukueshirezu Tsurezure become markably punctual with a release just months removed from their fifth single “Odd eye“. The girls of Yukueshirezu Tsurezure ingratiate themselves with my graces wearing outfits that look like my best dress shirt thrown on slippily in the morning. A school girl suspense story plays out with this new single perhaps telegraphed by the bullying seen in the opening frames of the PV. No, things don’t get better. In fact things get downright homicidal by the end of “ssixth”. I wouldn’t call this the feel-good video of the summer, but for me there is something captivating in this cautionary tale. Yukueshirezu Tsurezure, or at least just Mare A Komachi, appear as valkyries releasing our poor protagonist from pain at great cost. I feel like Yukueshirezu Tsurezure is criminally underappreciated, and everyone should at least take a good look at what is going on here with “ssixth”. You can find “ssixth” on Yukueshirezu Tsurezure’s sixth single set for release July 3, 2019.

New PV Alert: COLOR’z – Survivor

Coming from a forthcoming album due in September, the Bell Agency’s COLOR’z hit us with the metal infused promotional video for “Survivor”. Set in the interior rooms of a temple that I’m sure you’ve seen before, the girls draw swords on each other when they should really be getting along. But, I suppose the theme survivor doesn’t mean a whole lot if everyone comes out on top. Speaking of over the top, the guitars on “Survivor” are pushed to insane levels with the main riff getting textural backing from the keyboards. Overall, the sound is aggressive in a way that’s only possible in the post BABYMETAL idol world. The tradional Japanese looks should also draw some of you into the PV. I mean to say that you’ll find something interesting here. Look for COLOR’z new release in September.

New PV Alert: notall – Afure gorilla

For their next act, the social idols bring to us the animated promotional video to their latest digital release “Afure gorilla (あふれゴリラ)”. As you can tell, there will be many gorillas in the PV. The primates wear skirts, wave pom poms, and twirl like they belong in a millenial produced video with shafts of sun streaming in from the background. OK, that’s a pretty specific image that has nothing to do with “Afure gorilla”, but that tangent just goes to demonstrate that there really isn’t a whole lot going on with this promotional video. The music feels a bit childish, which fits the theme well. With the heaviness of the last few promotional videos I’ve seen, this lighter side of things is a welcome change. “Afure gorilla” is available digitally from the retailers listed below.

New PV Alert: HASHiYASUME ATSUKO (BiSH) – A la mode

Following hot on the heels of the new BiSH album “CARROTS and STiCKS” comes this solo single from the glasses member, HASHiYUME ATSUKO (ハシヤスメ・アツコ), real name Kuramoto Aoi (倉本あおい). Featuring muscley background back dancers (as well as some back dancers that you might find familiar), “A la mode (ア・ラ・モード)” changes things up from the usual punk assault of BiSH with a thoroughly pop electronic offering that feels like it lives up the refrain “We can’t stop music; I got the best music.” What I found particularly endearing was the way the other members of BiSH seemed to fawn over ATSUKO’s performance in a way that felt sisterly: her group mates WANT her to succeed. ATSUKO definitely has a distinctive delivery and the charm of a librarian breaking out of the stacks for a weekend out at the lake for the all you can eat buffet. I mean every word of that as a compliment, so don’t even start to bash. At this point I would link you to “A la mode”, but the powers that be don’t seem to have links for me.

New PV Alert: BABYMETAL – PA PA YA!! (feat. F.HERO)

It’s time for the machine to start rolling again. BABYMETAL, the phenomenon that somehow transcended its idol roots, releases a new promotional WAY ahead of the release of their new album but just in time to promote their upcoming world tour. METAL GALAXY has an October 11 street date that reflects the group’s global aspirations. As I sit writing this, the group just performed at the Glastonbury Festival with Morning Musume’s Sayashi Riho in the third spot. Obviously, that has great importance to me, but it isn’t necessarily important in the scope of “PA PA YA!!” Here, we get an evergetic live performance from Yokohama Arena with SU-METAL and MOA-METAL joined by Sakura Gakuin‘s Fujihira Kano and Thai rapper F.HERO. There’s fire everywhere, and catchy ostinato, and guitar sounds that come with a triple digit atomic mass. BABYMETAL’s secret weapon has always been the catchiness of the songs, and “PA PA YA!!” doesn’t disappoint with its quick melody that’ll have listeners contemplating their next tropical fruit purchase. It seems that BABYMETAL are best when singing about foods? I guess that’s an idol carryover that’ll be lost on their metal fans. You can find “PA PA YA!!” digitally here, or take the plunge and grab METAL GALAXY by visiting the retailers listed below.

ABOUT BABYMETAL

Babymetal, stylized as BABYMETAL (ベビーメタル) are a Japanese kawaii metal band. Originally consisting of Nakamoto Suzuka (中元すず香) as “Su-metal”, Mizuno Yui (水野由結) as “Yuimetal”, and Kikuchi Moa (菊地最愛) as “Moametal”, the band was formed with the concept of a fusion of the heavy metal and Japanese idol genres. The band is produced by Kobametal from the Amuse talent agency. Their vocals are backed by heavy metal instrumentation played by the Kami Band during live performances. Initially formed in 2010 as a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became an independent act in 2013, following Nakamoto’s departure from Sakura Gakuin. Babymetal has embarked on several tours, including the Babymetal World Tour 2014 held after the release of Babymetal, with a majority of their tour dates taking place outside of Asia. With the departure of Mizuno Yui in 2018, BABYMETAL continues with the duo of Nakamoto Suzuka and Mizuno Yui.

New PV Alert: SUPER GiRLS – POP!!POP!!POP!! / White Melody

SUPER☆GiRLS – POP!!POP!!POP!!

SUPER☆GiRLS – White Melody

In their quest to give some showcase to their 4th chapter members, SUPER☆GiRLS arrive with the first in a series of promotional videos each with a different girl at center. Both of these promotional videos are of the extreme “Short Version” variety, which I admit is frustrating. We start things off with the grooving “POP!!POP!!POP!!” that puts Ishimaru Chika and her supreme blue color. The song feels a little bit like it might have been on the release stack for GEM in a different universe, and certainly the house party PV gives me some flashbacks. “White Melody” puts Higuchi Nazuna in the forefront. Being of high school age, the rest of the girls get behind her with the attractive orange and white seifuku and “SG” logo on the chest (with member colors no less!). “White Melody” is more of the thoughtful, nostalgic pop variety. Of course, it doesn’t matter how many times I see the music room dance shots; I still fall for them. Both songs featured can be found on the double A-side “POP!!POP!!POP!! / White Melody”, which unfortunately doesn’t have any links.
